Every thing must out going!
Asia Song Society
45 Canal Street NYC
May 30 – June 6, 2009
On May 30, 2009 Asia Song Society will present Every thing must out going! an exhibition in the form of a temporary pop-up shop at 45 Canal Street. Featuring artist-produced printed matter as well as limited edition sculptures, drawings, records, accessories, and clothing, the exhibition seeks to briefly reposition the way that art and commerce play out aesthetically and experientially at ASS. Curated by Elizabeth Lovero, EMOG features work by over 30 artists as well as an exhibition design by architect Rafael de Cardenas that incorporates elements of gallery and retail space.
In a gesture to both the Fluxus shop and the gallery’s neighboring businesses, Every thing must out going! takes its title from a hand-drawn advertisement at a nearby Chinatown shop. Much recent dialogue has drawn attention to the fluid nature of contemporary artistic practices’ that slip across media and discipline to utilize whatever best suits the idea or intent. Sidestepping big, bombastic projects and performances, Every thing must out going! highlights artists’ working on the more intimate end of ephemeral practice. These individuals often make a virtue of necessity but not at the expense of quality or aesthetic. Instead, as old models of distribution/production struggle in the face of digital reproduction [see: major record labels and newspapers] increasingly fragmented markets, [film studios and publishing houses] and loss of patrons [museums and galleries], the choice to self-publish and target an audience of one’s own peers is a logical one. There’s no need to rally against the mainstream when you can hear its death rattle.
